The learning activity “Voando com Flying Low” was developed as a space for sharing Grupo Flying Low’s research, bringing together breaking foundations — including stance, top rock, go downs, and footwork — with elements of contemporary dance and improvisation. The approach goes beyond executing steps, prioritising an exploration of dynamics already present in breaking culture, such as the relationship between movement and musicality, while also bringing in reflections on stage creation. Participants are invited not only to learn techniques, but to understand their essence, adapt them to their own bodies and repertoires, and think about dance as an expressive language connected to social and historical contexts.
Alongside practice, the activity includes discussion of breaking’s trajectory, its influences, and its role in the current scene. The group also shares creative processes used in its productions, such as Menino Assum Preto, which draws on a song by Luiz Gonzaga to address work, oppression, territory, and belonging. This approach encourages participants to develop a critical view of dance, understanding it as a narrative tool and a force for social transformation.
The methodology balances technique, creation, and dramaturgical thinking, encouraging new artistic connections. Through practical exercises and discussion, the workshop expands participants’ repertoires, showing how dance can be a means of personal and collective inquiry, both onstage and in life.
Workshops
The workshops begin with breaking’s history, culture, musicality, and foundations. With beginners, they build the first bases; with experienced dancers, they deepen repertoire, improvisation, and movement research; with professionals, they share creative tools used in Flying Low’s works.
Each pathway adapts to the group, available time, and space. The workshops have taken place in learning and creative settings including ETEC de Artes, Companhia de Danças de Diadema, and Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade.
Residency
The residency begins with the questions and experiences brought by each group. Composition games, body writing, improvisation, and dramaturgy organise a collective process of inquiry.
Depending on its duration and context, the process may open to the public or culminate in a presentation. The residency can also serve as a laboratory for research connected to Concepções Marginais and Em Revoada.
